Familiar Waters

·4 min read·Sam Edwards

Hi everyone,

It's been a few weeks since we revealed the new setting for Stranded Deep 2, and the response has been amazing. We've read your comments, watched your reaction videos, and seen so many new and familiar faces join us on Discord. Thank you. It means a lot to the whole team, and it's great to see you just as excited as we are to dive into this new adventure.

It was also great to see you sharing what you love most about the first game and hope to see in SD2. You told us about everything from relaxing on the shore at sunset, spending a day gathering resources, tidying up camp, tending to your gardens, to fighting sharks and dragging them back to shore as a trophy. And you love that survival is grounded but simple so you can enjoy it all. We love these moments too. One of our most important goals is to capture that feeling while taking you somewhere new.

With that in mind, I want to share more about how the desert works in SD2 and how those moments look in our new setting.

More Than Sand

When people hear "desert" they often picture a boring, sandy wasteland and neverending heat. But just like SD1, the experience in SD2 is built around water. The desert surrounds the river environment.

Here's a look at one of our early planning maps:

Not to scale. Work in progress.

This map shows you the idea behind the world. The experience is focused around exploring the biomes along the river, combined with "diving" into the surrounding desert.

The river connects the world and has a life of its own. In some places, it's wide and slow, letting you drift with it. In others, it rushes through narrow canyons, pulling you along. Its green banks are full of life, with palm trees for shade, reeds, fish, and birds. Every bend brings you somewhere new, like open prairies, deep canyons, calm lakes, and more. All beautiful in their own way with different animals, plants, and resources. Along the way, you'll find safe spaces where you can set up camp and breathe. The further you explore from the river, the more dangerous the land gets, but also more rewarding.

Diving Into the Desert

In SD1, the ocean was always there. You chose when to dive in. You could survive on land, but the best loot was always in the deep. SD2 works the same way. You'll still explore wrecks along the river while watching out for new predators like crocodiles and hippos. But now, that experience extends onto land, with even more to discover. The harsh desert is like the deep ocean. Spot something on the horizon, like a broken-down vehicle, an old camp, or an unfamiliar structure. Prepare, and dive in when you're ready.

That last part is important: when you're ready. If you want to stay by the river, build your camp, and watch the sun go down, you can. There's no wrong way to play.

A Day on the River

Some days are for adventure — you raise anchor and set sail down the river to somewhere new. Other days are spent at home — making your base or raft bigger, collecting resources, organizing storage, tending to plants, or preparing meals for your next journey, all while listening to the river and a chill soundtrack in the background.

Whatever the day brings, it ends at home.

After exploring a new branch of the river, you paddle the kayak back upstream with your spoils. Your houseboat is tied to the bank where you left it. You light the fire, cook dinner, and check your watch. Everything's looking good. You place the artefact you found on a shelf. Almost a complete set. Across the water, a fox is hunting lizards in the reeds. The sun drops behind the dunes and the whole sky turns purple and orange.

Tomorrow is a new day, and maybe you'll head somewhere exciting. Tonight, you're home.
